Uploading Your Website

When I first started designing websites I was very proud of the fact that I had made something that everyone around the world could see what I made. I created webpage after webpage until I was blue. What I did not understand however, was that nobody except me could view them. I got so frustrated I was ready to toss it out the window.
After doing some serious reading and hunting I found out that what I had failed to do was to upload my WebPages to the server.
Upload: to transfer information from your computer to another computer using a modem.
Server: A computer that is designated to hold the information you send it. Many of these are permanently connected to the internet. Keep in mind that once you disconnect from the internet no one can see your site unless it was on a "server".
There are a few ways to save you website on an internet server. Many ISPs (internet service providers) have an on screen system that allows you to choose options from a menu and from those choices you webpage is created. This is normally very easy to use but there are drawbacks. You are limited in your choices by what they make available and you must be online the entire time you are creating your site. Karen N. is using this method to build her website. As she makes her design choices they are saved directly on the server.
The next method is to create the WebPages at home using a word processing program and saving it as html (Hypertext Markup Language). Then uploading the pages by using an onscreen or web-based transfer site. Many web- space provides us this method along with the one above to give customers more options.
These are all options we will explore as members of our class decide which they like better.
The last option I wish to point out is the use of an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) Program. FTP programs are simply and application that allows you to "upload" files from your computer to the remote computer (server). It divides the screen in half and lets you see what is on your computer and what is on the server. By simply clicking and dragging you can transfer a copy of picture, sounds, scripts and WebPages from your local computer (your machine) to the remote computer (server).
During class we will cover the features of this easy to use program.
